About us

AND ABOUT HOW IT ALL BEGAN.

Who are DaM?

Back then, this small fishing community – accessible only by driving for nearly four hours along a bumpy track – had neither first-aid equipment nor sufficient medicines or dressing material. The local health centre, where a nurse tends to the sick and to accident victims, was visited by a doctor only once every three months. A surfaced road to Tarrafal has now been built, enabling the community to be reached in two hours, and a physician now comes once a month.

August 2015 saw a European branch of this organization formed in Germany, called ‘Förderverein Dar as Mãos’ (‘Friends of Dar as Mãos’).

Our chief goal is to provide the best possible healthcare. After we had obtained first-aid equipment, a wide range of other medical equipment for the health centre followed. We are constantly working to further improve its resources.

The next highest priorities (immediately behind healthcare) are education and environmental protection:

– We support the secondary-school pupils and tertiary-education students from the village with a modest financial contribution each month

– The children at the village’s primary school receive a wide variety of school supplies at the start of the school year

– We help families with school children in the form of in-kind gifts

We aim to get children and young people interested in nature conservation and environmental issues, and actively include them in relevant activities

In order that we can carry out our activities and projects, we work together with other charitable organizations in Cape Verde and Germany. Our own financial resources consist almost entirely of private donations.

There are also several commercial sponsors whose company provides us with donations in the form of money or goods, for example, the Mar Tranquilidade guesthouse, located in Tarrafal.

We are delighted about the amazing support we have received from a truly committed and creative sponsor: the Jeanine Vahldiek Band. Ever since the duo produced their third CD, Blank Canvas, in 2014, its members – Jeanine and Steffen – have donated €1 to us per unit sold.

At their live concerts, they tell their audiences about us and our campaigns, and raise funds on our behalf. Jeanine also lends us her invaluable assistance in her fantastic work as our web designer.

The Germany-based charitable association called Pangea e.V. has encouraged and assisted children and young people in India, Nepal, Namibia and Cape Verde since 2011.

The non-profit organization ‘Young Talent’, from Porto Novo on Santo Antão, was created in 2017 with the aim of “Promoting and motivating young talent from the community of Porto Novo in various areas – music, dance, hip hop, technology and art – so that these youngsters don’t lose their abilities over time, but use them to contribute to our community.”

Sodade – Deutsch-Kapverdische-Gesellschaft e.V.’ is a Germany-based non-profit association that supports and fosters charitable social projects and educational measures on the Cape Verde Islands.

The charitable association ‘Amigos de Monte Trigo / Cabo Verde e.V.’, also based in Germany, is committed to helping the people of Monte Trigo both financially and in non-material ways. Its priority is to promote education and training for children and young people.

SMILES is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Spain dedicated to meeting healthcare needs in places with limited resources.
